Salt Water is Closer Than You Think

Updated: Feb 5, 2022

Love warm salty breezes, fresh seafood, and amazing sunrises and sunsets over the water? Need a quick getaway to relax and recharge? Look no further than the Town of West Point and King William County. Situated on the confluence of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers, which meet to create the scenic York River, West Point is the first point of salt water from the heart of Virginia! Located just 30 minutes from downtown Richmond, West Point and King William County offer amazing river views, water recreation, shopping, dining, year-round concerts and events (can we say Crab Carnival?!) and much more. Below are just a few highlights of your next Getaway to the Point:

Want to put your toes in the sand? Visit Beach Park in West Point, located at the furthermost tip of the downtown peninsula at 1st and Main Streets. Nestled between historic riverfront homes, Beach Park offers expansive views of the York River, a quaint beach to relax or build sand castles, and a great grassy area for picnics. Bring your bathing suit, float, kayak, or canoe and enjoy a dip in the York. Be on the lookout for seagulls, ospreys, eagles, crabs, and more!

Love fishing, boating, or paddling? At West Point’s Glass Island Boat Landing, Fishing Pier, and Kayak Launch, located on Glass Island Road, anglers have the unique opportunity to catch both fresh and saltwater fish. Pack your coolers and enjoy watching boats launch from the grassy picnic area. Take a walk along the boat launch and pier and watch fiddler crabs scurry across the shore. Pro tip – arrive early in the morning for some of the best sunrises in eastern Virginia!

Is it fresh seafood you fancy? Take a drive to Three Rivers Seafood on the Mattaponi River in West Point and enjoy fresh crabs, oysters and much more! Order your seafood steamed and seasoned or check out the fresh market which includes a variety of popular dips, fish, and shrimp. After making your selection, relax by the docks and watch local watermen bring in the day’s fresh catch. (Hint – make sure you follow Three Rivers Seafood on Facebook and Instagram as it prepares to open its new outdoor dining pavilion!) Looking for a fun dinner spot where you can dine al fresco along beautiful Main Street in downtown West Point or in a cozy indoor setting adorned with nautical decor? The Blue Crab of WP specializes in fresh local seafood and much more and is perfect for date night or a family outing. After dining on fresh seafood, steak, and more, enjoy a short walk down Main Street to 1st and Main and take in a sunset and breathtaking river views at Beach Park.

This is just a small sample of the many ways you can get your salt water fix in #wpkw. We invite you to learn more about our attractions, shops, restaurants, and lodging options and plan your next visit to West Point and King William County!
