The Beginning of Sunrise Tides – A River Retreat
In 2021, as the world began to open up post-COVID, we found our sanctuary in this beautiful home. It quickly became our peaceful retreat, a place to reconnect with family and friends we had missed dearly. That first year was magical; every weekend was filled with joy, laughter, and togetherness as we celebrated being in each other’s company once again, enjoying the serene river and the charming local area.
Sharing the Beauty
We always knew that our lives, especially with youth sports, would get too busy to visit every weekend. The idea of sharing our river home with others was born from our love for the place and our experiences with vacation rentals. We realized that Sunrise Tides, with its expansive property and stunning views, was perfect for creating memorable vacation experiences for others.
The house itself is a gem, featuring four bedrooms and a huge, amazing bunkroom with its own living space and kitchen – an ideal setup for families. Kids love having their own special space, and parents appreciate the convenience and fun it brings.
Diving into Hospitality
Although we had experience in rental properties and business management, the hospitality industry was new to us. We embraced the learning curve, diving into research about short-term rentals. Hosting friends and family gave us a good foundation, but we learned a lot along the way about creating a listing, managing rental platforms, setting house rules, responding to inquiries, and maintaining the property. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it.
Welcoming Guests
In 2022, we opened our doors as Sunrise Tides – A River Retreat. We anticipated a few long weekends booked by travelers from Richmond or DC. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming demand. Our home’s proximity to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Busch Gardens/Water Country made it a popular choice for out-of-state visitors looking for a summer vacation spot that combined historical exploration with a peaceful waterfront retreat.
Showcasing West Point and King William
One of our goals was to ensure that our guests experienced the charm of West Point and King William. We created a detailed guidebook and map highlighting local shops and restaurants, and we’ve loved seeing their enjoyment reflected in our guestbook. There’s nothing more gratifying than reading about a delightful dinner at The Blue Crab of WP or an afternoon of shopping from local boutiques in the town and county.
A Place to Be Together
Now in our third year of operation, Sunrise Tides has welcomed many guests, including three-generation families, groups of friends, wedding guests, and church retreat groups. Maintaining a five-star status throughout, our guests frequently praise the sunrise views, the river, and the beloved bunkroom.
We strive to make Sunrise Tides a space where there is something for everyone. We’ve added two grills, a playground, plenty of indoor and outdoor games, foosball, and a library full of books for lazy afternoons. One of the best compliments we receive is that our guests didn’t want to leave because they felt so comfortable and had so much fun.
